Alhambra, the palace and fortress of the Moorish monarchs of Granada in Spain. The name Alhambra, meaning "red" in Arabic, likely derives from the reddish hue of the rammed earth used to construct the fortress's outer walls. Now, let’s talk about the game...
Board game Alhambra Revised Edition (in Serbian) is designed for 2 to 6 players, and the goal is to build the most valuable and expansive structure, featuring many continuous walls.
In your Alhambra, you start with only a central square with a fountain, and all additional buildings must be purchased from the market. At the market, buildings have their price and color, each color having different values. Depending on their position on the market, a building can only be purchased with one of four possible currencies.
At the start, you’ll receive some money—just enough to get started. Afterward, you can use your turn to collect more money or buy a city piece. In Alhambra, player activities are scored three times, so from the beginning, you must ensure all outer walls are connected and as long as possible, and dominate in one or more building colors, preferably the ones worth the most points.
The game ends when the market runs out of new building tiles that can be placed. This high-quality game belongs to the "eurogames" category but lacks one key characteristic of such games—complexity.
Alhambra is very simple to explain, with no complicated actions or rules, making it suitable for new players. While it’s easy to learn, playing well requires effort and strategy, based on observing what other players are doing.
A game that will keep you engaged for a long time, where you’ll hate your opponents when they snatch the building you wanted. Each player has their own strategy for winning, making it intellectually challenging, but much also depends on luck—what buildings appear on the board, what money you can collect...
