The board game Cascadia gives you and your friends the opportunity to compete in creating the most diverse ecosystem of the Pacific Northwest by drafting habitat tiles and wildlife tokens to build a beautiful landscape mosaic and, of course, score as many points as possible.
In Cascadia, you are tasked with taking turns building your habitat and populating it with wildlife. The goal is to place habitat tiles to create matching terrain that reduces fragmentation and ecosystem degradation while creating wildlife corridors. You begin with three hexagonal starting habitat tiles, and on your turn, you choose a new habitat tile that is paired with a specific wildlife token. You then place that tile adjacent to your others and the wildlife token onto a matching habitat. There are five types of habitats in the game: mountains, forests, prairies, wetlands, and rivers. Additionally, there are five types of animals at your disposal: foxes, elk, bears, hawks, and salmon.
During your turn, you may place only one habitat tile, each of which depicts one to three types of wildlife that can settle there. At the start of each turn, you must choose from four tiles in the center of the table, each randomly paired with a wildlife token, so you must make the best of what is offered—unless you have a Nature Token to spend, which allows you to pick any combination of your choice. To achieve the highest score, you will need to arrange wildlife according to the patterns indicated on the scoring goal cards for each species. Furthermore, try to expand your habitats as much as possible, as you will receive points at the end of the game for your largest contiguous area of each habitat type, with a bonus if your habitat is larger than those of your opponents.
The game ends when there are no more habitat tiles left in the supply. Points gathered through various means are then totaled. You must devise a clever strategy and account for everything, especially the needs of the wildlife. Perhaps the hawks want to be separate from other hawks, while the foxes want many different animals surrounding them, and the bears want to be in pairs. Can you make it happen?
