Experience the rise of Catan! Cities are growing and advancing—but great wealth also attracts barbarians. Wild hordes begin threatening the island. You have little time to gather an army of knights to stop them. Only those brave enough to stand against the barbarians can protect their cities from destruction.
Catan: Cities & Knights (in Serbian) is an expansion for the board game Catan ( in Serbian) that adds several new mechanics, with the two most important being the creation of knights to defend the land from barbarian attacks and the construction of city improvements that provide benefits to their owners. This expansion adds tactical depth and increases the length of the game.
The expansion changes the base game in three major ways:

1. Three new commodities—paper, cloth, and coins—are introduced, which are distinct from regular resources. These can be obtained from forests, pastures, and mountains. Cities, which normally produce two of the same resource, now generate one resource and one corresponding commodity. (To facilitate acquiring commodities, each player starts the game with one city and one settlement on the board.) These commodities allow players to build city improvements that provide various advantages and victory points.
2. The standard development card deck is replaced by three different decks, each corresponding to one of the new commodities. Constructing city improvements gives players a chance to draw from these decks whenever the dice are rolled. These new cards function similarly to development cards in the base game but offer a wider range of effects. (Some cards are also better balanced—for example, the new "Resource Monopoly" card can take no more than two specified resources from any player.)
3. Players can also build knights along their road network. These knights can be used to claim key intersections and move the robber (replacing the "Soldier" card function), but more importantly, they are essential for defending the island from periodic barbarian attacks. If the island is successfully defended, the player(s) with the most knights will be rewarded. If not, the player(s) with the fewest knights will have one of their cities downgraded to a settlement.
