Across the globe, railway tracks are connecting countries and continents, cities and ports; journeys that used to take weeks can now be completed in just a few days. Seas and oceans are no longer obstacles, as massive steamships carry hundreds of people across the oceans. From Los Angeles to Sydney, from Murmansk to Dar es Salaam.
The board game Ticket to Ride: Rails & Sails uses the familiar gameplay of the Ticket to Ride series and now expands it across the entire world. In this version, there are many innovations compared to what we are used to in TTR games. Now, in addition to trains, we build ship routes, which doubles both the fun and the headaches.
The game comes with two game boards: on one side is a map of the entire world, and on the other, the Great Lakes of North America. Players start with a different number of cards and tokens depending on which side they play, and each side has several differences in gameplay. In addition to standard route cards, there are now routes that don't just have two cities but also include intermediate stops, which naturally bring you more points if you manage to connect them.
The biggest headache in the game is now the harbors; each player receives three at the start and must place them on the board by the end of the game. If they fail, players will pay a penalty for each harbor still in their possession at the end of the game. However, harbors also have positive sides, as they can significantly increase your score if you manage to connect your harbor with one to three of your completed routes... Not to mention what you need to place a harbor; let's just say it’s not exactly easy. A double-edged sword, but only those who take risks will, of course, profit.
