During this period, Scotland made the transition from an agricultural to an industrially developed country that relied heavily on trade and export. In the years that followed, food production increased significantly to support population growth. Flax was increasingly replaced by cheaper cotton, and sheep farming grew in importance. More and more distilleries were established, and whisky became a premium beverage in Europe.
