The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring Trick-Taking Game is a cooperative card game that unfolds over eighteen chapters, following the events of the book The Fellowship of the Ring. You can play the chapters in any order, but it's ideal to follow them sequentially to experience the full story.
In each chapter, every player takes on the role of a character—Frodo, Gandalf, Sam, Pippin, Farmer Maggot, and others. Each character has a specific condition they must meet to get through the chapter and advance the story. For example, Frodo must capture the Ring cards, while Pippin wants to finish with as few tricks as possible. As you progress through the chapters, new characters, items, and challenges are introduced.
The deck consists of 37 cards, with one card in each hand being set aside as "lost." The player who receives the One Ring card takes on the role of Frodo, while others choose from the available characters based on their cards. The One Ring is the only trump card in the game, but the trump suit cannot be led until someone plays the Ring off-suit.
In a two-player game, one deck is dealt to a "fictional" player, with some cards face up and others face down. This fictional player is assigned a role, and one of the real players plays for them based on the available cards.
In the solo version, the player manages four hands with cards face up. Each hand is linked to a specific character, and only a few cards are available for play at any given time. After each trick, a new card is dealt to each hand.
