In 1347, Genoese galleys from the Crimean Peninsula arrived in Sicily and anchored in the ancient port of Messina. The galleys had rats. The rats had fleas. And the fleas carried the plague that became known as the Black Death. Over the next four years, in cities across Europe, half of the population ceased to exist.
The board game Messina 1347, named after the Sicilian city of the same name, introduces you to the period of the plague epidemic and the spread of its infection throughout the city. During this time, merchant ships delivering luxury goods to Europe brought an unprecedented epidemic to these lands—and one of the first cities affected was Messina, Italy.
In this game, you take on the roles of noble families with estates in the countryside surrounding Messina. You attempt to rescue people from the plague by placing infected individuals into quarantine and putting the uninfected to work on your estates. As the plague in Messina worsens, you will build small independent communities, attempting to control the plague by any means necessary. Over time, you will have the opportunity to defy the plague and return the rescued citizens to repopulate the city. At the end of the game, the winner is the player who has done the most for Messina.
