Europe, 1920—a time of unrest. The ashes of the First World War still cover the snow. The capitalistic city-state known as "The Factory," which supplied the war's participants with powerful, heavily armored mechs, has closed its doors, thereby attracting the attention of several neighboring countries.

Scythe is a board game set in an alternate-history 1920s. It is a time of farming and war, broken hearts and rusted machinery, innovation and heroism.
In Scythe, each player assumes the role of a leader of one of the fallen nations, attempting to restore their honor and lead their faction to power in Eastern Europe. Throughout the game, you will conquer territories, enlist new recruits, gather resources, increase your population, construct buildings, and activate monstrous mechs.
Each player begins the game with different amounts of basic resources (power, victory points, movement capabilities, and population), special faction abilities, and unique hidden objectives. Starting positions are specially calibrated to contribute to each faction's uniqueness and the asymmetry of the environment.
Scythe gives players almost complete control over their destiny. Aside from the unique objectives, the only elements of luck in the game are the encounter cards—representing interactions with the inhabitants of newly explored lands—and combat cards, which provide a temporary bonus during war with other nations. Furthermore, combat is driven by player choice, rather than luck or randomness.
Scythe utilizes an improved action-selection mechanism (without rounds or phases) that maintains a brisk gameplay tempo and reduces downtime between turns. Although there is a high degree of direct conflict and confrontation, there is no player elimination, nor can units be killed or destroyed.
Every part of the game is upgradeable. Players can upgrade their actions to become more efficient, build various structures to increase their influence on the map, enlist new recruits to improve their abilities through numbers, and activate mechs to discourage other players from invading, expanding their borders, and harvesting greater quantities of various resources. This upgrade mechanism creates a sense of momentum and progress throughout the game. The order in which players improve their nations adds to the uniqueness of every game, even when playing the same faction multiple times.
