In the early 2400s, humanity begins to terraform the planet Mars. Giant corporations, sponsored by the World Government on Earth, initiate massive projects to raise the temperature, oxygen level, and ocean coverage until the environment is habitable.
In the board game Terraforming Mars, you play as one of these corporations. You work together in the terraforming process, but you also compete for victory points, which are awarded not only for your contributions to terraforming but also for advancing human infrastructure throughout the solar system and performing other commendable actions.
Players receive unique project cards (from over two hundred different ones) by buying them into their hand. Projects (cards) can represent anything from introducing plant life or animals, dropping asteroids onto the surface, building cities, to mining Jupiter's moons and establishing greenhouse gas industries to heat the atmosphere. The cards can give you immediate bonuses as well as increase the production of various resources. Your income is supplemented by your production, and you also get victory points from many other sources. Each player tracks their production and resources on their player boards, and the game uses six types of resources: MegaCredits, Steel, Titanium, Plants, Energy, and Heat. On the game board, you compete for the best locations for your city tiles, ocean tiles, and greenery. You also compete for various milestones and awards worth many victory points.
