The board game Western Legends: Blood Money is the second major expansion for the game Western Legends, bringing numerous new modules to customize every playthrough. In this expansion, players face greater dangers than in the base game and the previous expansion, Ante Up, with even higher stakes and rewards on the line.
One of the key innovations in this expansion is the risk die, which players can roll during their turn in hopes of gaining extra rewards, such as additional money, a chance for free movement, or the opportunity to draw a poker card, which allows the player to perform specific abilities. However, the consequences of rolling a negative outcome on the risk die are wounds, which can accumulate over time and have serious effects.
The expansion also introduces injuries, which a player receives when their character sustains a certain number of wounds. Injuries impose negative effects that players must deal with throughout the entire game, making it difficult to perform basic actions and potentially affecting their final score.
In addition to new penalties for dangerous behavior, Blood Money introduces new ways for players to acquire equipment and rewards. The Traveling Trader is a merchant stocked with standard items and legendary gear that players can acquire if they encounter them on the board. Players can now also purchase deeds to specific locations in the game, gaining additional victory points and a unique ability. Blood Money replaces the previous story system found in Western Legends and Ante Up with a new "Legendary" story system, which introduces more engaging narratives, bigger rewards, and a story board that players can use to track their decisions and story points.
