North of Waterdeep, near the High Forest and beneath the Dessarin Hills, evil has begun to gather. Four cults, devoted to the Princes of Elemental Evil, have formed an alliance to seize disproportionate power. However, for the rest of the inhabitants of Faerûn, the price for that power is far too high. The cultists have begun spreading their messages of deception across the land, recruiting all manner of treacherous creatures and gullible followers. The forces of air, earth, fire, and water have started wreaking havoc on the towns surrounding the Dessarin Hills. From Baldur’s Gate to Icewind Dale, adventurers are beginning to answer the pleas for help from citizens of small communities like Red Larch.
The evil Elemental Princes dwell in remote regions far from Faerûn, but fanatical mortals have found a way to reach these dark entities and offer their allegiance. The Princes have no love or need for mortal followers, but they gladly seize any opportunity to sow destruction across the material realms. The Elemental Princes grant the power sought by weak-minded individuals hungry for destruction, commanding them to create chaos among mortals in their name.
The cults of the Howling Fury, Black Earth, Eternal Flame, and Crushing Wave hide behind a thin veil of respectability, but sharp-witted heroes can see through the mask to the power-hungry madmen they truly are.
Red Larch, a small town near the Dessarin Hills, has witnessed strange, unnatural occurrences that threaten not only the destruction of their town but the entire Sword Coast region. A few adventurers arrive in Red Larch representing powerful organizations of Faerûn, such as the Emerald Enclave and the Zhentarim. Each has its own interest in finding the source of the elemental corruption and putting an end to the root of this evil.
