The board game Undaunted: Stalingrad presents a unique World War II adventure where players take on the roles of military leaders in the battle for Stalingrad. Developed by Trevor Benjamin and David Thompson, this game was awarded "Best 2-Player Board Game" at the 2022 Golden Geek Awards and has been hailed by Shut Up & Sit Down as "the best World War II game of all time."
The game utilizes an easy-to-learn deck-building system that ensures dynamic and exciting gameplay, making it accessible even to those who are not hardcore wargame enthusiasts. While it retains the same brilliant and engaging core loop as previous titles in the series, Undaunted: Stalingrad requires a greater commitment, featuring several necessary and gradually revealed adjustments and refinements.
Unlike the Normandy and North Africa versions, the scenarios in Stalingrad cannot be played as standalone games. It is strictly designed as a legacy-style campaign for the same two players, who must fully commit to one side and play through up to 15 scenarios. During these missions, not only do the decks change, but the urban landscape itself is permanently transformed; this is beautifully represented by iterated map tiles that you swap out as the campaign progresses.
Victories in this game are often Pyrrhic, and the consequences of a hard-fought win—as well as a catastrophic defeat—will be felt in future games. This is particularly evident through the permanent loss mechanism, where specific members of your squad are removed from your deck forever, including those you may have successfully upgraded. Because of this, a "Withdraw" option is included, allowing you to concede to your opponent if you decide it is better to lose the battle than to permanently damage your valuable deck. Alternatively, you can choose to keep risking the brave men and women fighting for your cause.
In keeping with the previous entries in the Undaunted series, the gameplay is finely tuned, perfectly balanced, and appropriately nuanced. Moving the setting into an even more epic scope makes Stalingrad the pinnacle of the series, especially when narrative and mechanical surprises emerge during the unfolding campaign. This is, without a doubt, one of the most exciting tabletop experiences of 2022. The only drawback, given its nature as a two-player, long-form campaign, is that it isn't easily shared with a larger group.
